Col was born and raised on a farm, surrounded by a rather large extended family. The farm had cycled through various crops in its time, as it had previously belonged to his father, his grandfather, his great grandfather, and so forth. From man to man and hand to hand, the farm had been passed down through generations, and it was large enough that his entire family managed to take care of it, with all their many hands.

Col was the middle child in his family, constantly teased by his older brothers and ignored by his older sisters. In turn, he carried this tradition on to his own younger brothers and sister, teasing and ignoring them as the whim struck him. There was always a sense of hostility between him and the rest of his immediate family, but they did what they needed to, working together to take care of the farm.

The first crisis came in the form of an influenza epidemic when he was thirteen; it took both his grandmother and his grandfather, along with his younger sister and several of his nephews and nieces. The family mourned, and buried their dead, but went on. There were still enough hands to take care of the farm -- still more than enough, really, and Col was back to his teasing, smiling self in no time.

The second crisis hit two years later, when their potato crop didn't pull through after it was hit by a fairly nasty illness. The family struggled all through the winter, and during that season was when Col first started using his drugs.

He'd seen his father using them before, and so it wasn't hard to find them. He was smoking opium within minutes, and the relief it brought him from the stress that the harsh winter had brought down was welcomed. From then on, he took his father's drugs as often as he dared, sure the whole time that his father was aware of it and simply didn't care.

Once spring came, he left home, taking his father's opium with him. He took up a free sort of lifestyle, living from day-to-day, town-to-town, taking whatever work he was handed or offered without complaint. Every cent he earned went to keeping his opium supply up, and finding a place to stay, or a consistant job, or even food to eat were all secondary priorities.

He heard about the third crisis when he was 16; a fire had hit the farm and destroyed it almost completely.

Col doesn't believe in thinking too much about the past, or in thinking too much about the future. His perpetual philosophy is "seize the day," and he does just that. He works hard, smiles often, is a hit with the ladies, and doesn't seem to have a care in the world.

But every cent he earns goes toward his opium, which he smokes in increasing amounts as time goes on. It's gotten to the point where he can't function much at all if he's in a withdrawal, both because of physical problems and because of the mental state it puts him into. Withdrawal doesn't exactly make him depressed, per se; a more accurate term would be that he becomes very apathetic and detached. He tends to retreat from the world, and the time that he's without his drugs have become almost hazier than the times when he has them.

His addiction to these drugs is strong, and only getting stronger as he takes more and more of them into his system. If he's desperate, though, he never lets it show, flashing a grin and going back to heis work. He's not big on panic, as experience has taught him that panicking about a situation tends to just make things worse.

As a result of his constant high, he seems very restless and eager to work, which is one reason he's never suffered for a job. His actual demeanor, however, is very laid-back and relaxed, and he's got a seeming "come-what-may" attitude about the world around him.

As long as he keeps getting his supply of narcotics, he's happy.

Col has rather wild black hair that's cut around his chin, though the length varies depending on how long he can stand to go between trims. His eyes are bright with what some people call the light of life, but really are just hazed over by his constant drug abuse. He's very handsome, according to most people, and has a charismatic manner to him. He's almost always smiling, and it's a rare occassion to see him otherwise. He's very tall and decently built, which makes him look older than his 17 years.
